While residents of any city may complain that unpaved and pothole filled roads are aesthetically displeasing, the real incentive for cities to make sure their roads are as smooth as possible is the possibility of accidents. Citizen safety is obviously a concern, but cities also want to ensure that their potential liability is as low as possible, and making streets safe is one means of doing that. This is becoming especially true as more and more people are choosing bicycles as their primary means of transportation. When a car hits a pothole, there may be an uncomfortable bump, and the car may sustain damage, but it will generally not result in an accident. A bike hitting a pothole is whole different story, however, and bicycle accidents as a result of poorly maintained streets may lead to serious injuries. In such a situation, it may be wise to contact an expert bicycle accident attorney at 617-787-3700.
In 2017, Los Angeles paid out over $19 million in lawsuits surrounding bicycle crashes, an amount four times higher than any year in the past decade. Victims and attorneys are suggesting that the city is not nearly vigilant enough in maintaining its streets at a proper level, and an in analysis done by the LA Times, 20% of Los Angeles’s streets with bike lanes received a grade of D or F in terms of quality.
Some experts blame the city’s poorly coordinated public works department, while others suggest that those that suffer bike accidents have more avenues with which to explore potential claims than in the past. Whatever the cause, Mayor Eric Garcetti has since assured the media that L.A. is working vigilantly to reduce the number of such bike crashes.

Reports indicate that cycle deaths have been going up by 55% each year since 2013, and that the average age of a cyclist killed in a collision is 45. These statistics suggest that while the increased trend in cycling may reflect many choosing a more active and healthy lifestyle, there is certainly a greater exposure to the risk of bicycle collisions resulting in death.
Reports further indicate that a number of factors present in cyclist deaths have exacerbated the statistics. For example, a large portion of cyclist accidents involve alcohol use, either the rider or the driver. What’s more, many cyclists who are killed were not wearing a helmet. Advocates for greater biking safety have suggested that more clearly marked bike lanes, as well as more conscientious driving, could lead to decreased fatalities on the road.
Before we’re old enough to be able to drive cars, biking from place to place was often the most efficient and quickest way to get where we needed to go. However, it was always risky riding a bicycle in an area with heavy vehicular traffic or biking late at night. Bicyclists, of all ages, need to make sure they are careful while riding and take the necessary safety precautions Even when a rider takes the necessary precautions, however, if a vehicle negligently enters your bike lane, which causes you to have an accident, you may be entitled to just compensation equal to the amount of your pain and suffering and other damages. Victims of bicycle accidents should rely on an experienced bicycle accident personal injury attorney here at the Law Offices of Gilbert R. Hoy, Jr. and Affiliates to help guide them through this complicated litigation process.
This past Tuesday, a boy, somewhere between the ages of 9 and 11, was riding his bike, to school, when he was hit by a truck. The Garfield, New Jersey Police Department is conducting the investigation and is looking for any information regarding the truck. Since the accidents, officers have not yet been able to identify the boy and are working to notify the victim’s family. Mayor Richard Rigoglioso, who is also the local middle school principal, said that he did not believe the boy was a Garfield Middle School student because he was not wearing a uniform. The bicycle accident occurred near two other schools and only a block away from where the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office filmed a driver safety film last September.
