Boston Neighborhood Set to Unveil New Bike Lanes.

The Boston, MA South End neighborhood has released plans to install new bike lanes on A and D Streets as part of the city’s Boston Bikes program.

Though the plans are still in their early stages, Nicole Freedman, director of the Boston Bikes program, said that the plans to improve road safety for bicyclists could come to fruition as early as this spring. The neighborhood still has to conduct a public forum on the subject of implementing the new bike lanes before any construction work can begin.

According to the new bike infrastructure, street designs that alert driver of cyclists, traditional bike lanes, and bike lanes that separate cars from bikes with a two-foot buffer, will be installed on the half-mile section of A Street from Dorchester Avenue to Congress Street.

The D Street plans will cover a 1.4 mile long section of the road, with many of the same lanes as A Street. The lanes would be installed from Dorchester Avenue to Seaport Boulevard.

Freedman emphasized that the new plans for bike lanes would increase the safety of bike riders. The neighborhood apparently sees the plans as promising, especially in the wake of several bicycle accidents across Boston in recent months.
