78 year-old Cheng Jin Lai was riding his bicycle at the intersection of 11th Street and Bryant Street in the South of Market neighborhood of San Francisco at approximately 8:45 a.m. on Monday. At that time, a city bus on the 27-Bryant line turned onto the intersection and struck Jin Lai and his bicycle. Jin Lai was pronounced dead at the scene of the bicycle accident.
The bus driver was a 10-year veteran of the municipal bus system and was tested for the presence of drugs and alcohol in his system after the accident per the protocol for such events. San Francisco Police are continuing their investigation into the circumstances of this unfortunate bike crash.
This is the second wrongful death involving a bicycle and a San Francisco city bus in the last two years.
