Robert Verhaaren was a competitor in the annual Wyoming LoToJa bicycle race. During the 206 mile race, Verhaaren swerved to avoid a pothole, but crashed into a guard rail and fell 35 feet to his death.
LoToJa organizers and Wyoming Department of Transportation officials are looking into the bicycle crash to see what can be done to avoid a similar tragedy next year.
Verhaaren’s death was the first fatality in the 30 years since the race began, but two other cyclists suffered serious personal injuries during the race. There was also an unusually high number of flat tires during the race, reportedly caused by small nails and thorny weeds.
